Tribe, Language, and Religion
Residents in Riau consists of diverse ethnic groups, such as Malay, Sundanese, Javanese, Minangkabau, Bugis, and Chinese. Interest here is the Malay majority. Sundanese and Javanese are living in resettlement areas. Meanwhile, the tribe Minagkabau many live in urban areas, such as in Pekanbaru and Dumai. They generally work as traders.
Bahasa Malay and Indonesian language is the language of instruction used by people of Riau. Here's religion is Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. The majority religion here is Islam.
Natural Resources and the Economy
Natural resources are very abundant in Riau, such as petroleum, gas, gold, wealth of forest, plantations, rivers and sea. To cultivate these crops, in Riau, there are several companies like Chevron Pacific Indonesia, PT. Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper Tbk, and PT. Riau Andalan Pulp & Paper. These companies engaged in oil and gas, processing of forest products and oil.
In this province there are also several types of plantations. But, which is developing oil palm and rubber plantations. Currently, oil palm plantation area in Riau is 1:34 million hectares and there are approximately 116 palm oil mills which produce Coconut Palm Oil (CPO) with the amount of 3.3868 million tons per year.

The only province that has owned enterprises (Regional-Owned Enterprises) in the field of air transport is Riau. The company is called PT Riau Air. The company was founded to serve communities in remote areas difficult to reach by road and sea. Riau Air has five aircraft types of the Dutch-made Fokker-50 aircraft and two Avro RJ-100.
