Six NATO warships that supported a plane on Wednesday (03/23/2011) began patrolling international waters off the coast of Libya to implement UN arms embargo against the regime of Moammar Qaddafi.

"The ships of war and NATO aircraft began patrolling off the coast of Libya as part of Operation Unified Protector," NATO said in its Internet pages.

The ships are already in the waters off the coast of Libya, while a patrol aircraft and fighter jets headed to that place.

"To make observations and intercept long distance flights suspected of carrying weapons to Libya," the alliance said.

"The ships will remain in international waters and will not enter the territorial waters of Libya," he explained. Pierre St-Amand-General of Canada previously announced, the six NATO countries have pledged 16 destroyers for the operation, including three submarines.
NATO allies agreed to launch an operation on Tuesday night.
